About Guanica
About the tour
Preview
Guanica
is bounded in the west by Lajas.
The population is 9,247 persons.
The town is in the corner of
a big harbor where USA navy invaded
Puerto Rico in 1898.
In 1508 Juan Ponce de Leon invaded here.
He then founded the place and called it Guaynia
(Taino for 'place of water').
Nowadays it is called the Friendly Town.
The Dry Forest, full of cactus, beach grapes,
trees and lots of birds is the largest
remaining trace of tropical dry coastal forest
in the world and an international
Biosphere Reserve since 1981.
The forest reserves 9,500 acres,
36 miles of trails. It has 700 varieties of
plants, including the guabairo,
(Puerto Rican Nightjar) only found in Puerto Rico.
There are beautiful beaches as Playa Jorabada,
Cana Gorda, Jaboncillo, Playa Santa,
Playa Ballena. A walking tour for
the Calle 25 of July is necessary.
Like Lajas, San German and Cabo Rojo
it was a sugarcane and cotton place
at the beginning of the last century.
